Whatever the country, whatever the language, the short form of our name is always ISO. ISO is derived from the Greek word isos ( ίσος, meaning "equal"). The organization provides this explanation of the name:īecause 'International Organization for Standardization' would have different acronyms in different languages (IOS in English, OIN in French), our founders decided to give it the short form ISO. ![]() The letters ISO do not represent an acronym or initialism. The International Organization for Standardization in French is Organisation internationale de normalisation and in Russian, Международная организация по стандартизации ( Mezhdunarodnaya organizatsiya po standartizatsii). ISO has 804 technical committees and subcommittees concerned with standards development. As of April 2022, the ISO has developed over 24,261 standards, covering everything from manufactured products and technology to food safety, agriculture, and healthcare. The organization develops and publishes international standards in all technical and nontechnical fields other than electrical and electronic engineering, which are the responsibility of the International Electrotechnical Commission.
